Monostation :: V7 :: 2010
Our History in a Nutshell
Monostation are a two piece band who formed in London in the late 1990's
over a shared love of The Who, Dope on Plastic, DJ Shadow and Early Simple
Minds. But spent most of their youth with mullets in the North West of England, Burnley to be precise,
listening to various genres:
Celtic Rock, Goth, Post Punk, Euro Funk, West/East Coast Pyschedelia, Early Hip Hop then the mullets
went west and ponytails took over with the ears tuned to Acid House,
Techno, Baggy, Indie, Shoegaze and Trip Hop.
Their early recordings concentrated on mainly sample based records in the
vein of Ninja Tune or Mo' Wax, but an interest in vintage
synths, Krautrock and Repetition, Repetition, Repetition led them down a
darker path.
A number of one off EP's and singles pointed the way but the critically
acclaimed 'Alchemy's series showed where Monostation's true talent's lay.
In terms of music all previous elements such as electronics, acoustic instruments,
beats, samples all were included but were pushed tonally to engage in a
more hypnotic and drone based sound.
A series of 12 3" EP's produced over two years and released on their own
Limit Switch label the Alchemy series drew comparisons with the work of
William Basinski, Greg Davis, Keith Fullerton Whitman, Stars of the Lid,
Loscil and the Kranky & 12K/Line Labels.
Since finishing Alchemy the band have released a number of one-off EP's on
the Smallfish record label with their latest release Tristimulus being
mastered by Taylor Duepree.
Monostation have just contributed music to a short film currently in
post-production and are currently working on their first album in 10 years.
